Independent applicants applying through GSM on or after 01.07.2011 must have an occupation listed upon the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) – Schedule 1 .
Applicants sponsored by a State or Territory Government through GSM on or after 01.07.2011 must have an occupation listed upon the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) – Schedule 1 or 2 and the relevant State Governments Skilled Migration Plan.

Skills Matching Database (SMD)
The Skill Matching Database (SMD) was an initiative started by the Australian Government to help match skilled people, who had applied to migrate to Australia, with skilled vacancies or skill shortages in Australia. The SMD contained the educational, employment and work details of skilled migrants and included many who are interested in
living and working in regional Australia. The database was used by employers for employer sponsored migration categories, as well as by State and Territory governments. The SMD is currently being decommissioned and new applicants applying after 30 June 2011 will not be eligible to be included on the SMD.

Proposed Skilled Migrant Selection Register (SkillSelect)
The introduction of SkillSelect will supersede the Skill Matching Database and it is anticipated to commence on 1 July 2012. It is proposed that SkillSelect will be a two stage process whereby potential applicants first register their claims for skilled migration through an online Expression of Interest (EOI), and subsequently may be invited to make an application for a visa.
SkillSelect proposes to enable employers to easily identify, compare and establish contact with potential skilled workers.
Under SkillSelect, prospective applicants submitting an EOI are able to indicate if they want to be considered for employer sponsored migration on either a temporary or a permanent basis.
Employers may contact prospective migrants to arrange sponsorship for permanent employer sponsored migration or a subclass 457 visa. Further information regarding SkillSelect can be found by clicking on the link below:
